Dear Sally,      How are you? Have you heard of the president's proclamation to free slaves.  Former slaves must be really happy with that idea, me, I could go either way .  I can't believe Lee won at Chancellorsville , we need a better leader. I heard this was Lee's greatest victory ... pfft.  I heard about the draft law going on, hopefully the boys are enlisted so they can prove themselves.  However if they do get drafted hopefully they don't get injured. I wish my boys they best of luck. I hope you are doing wonderful, have you heard of the Thanksgiving proclamation.  I will hopefully be able to go back home and eat a nice feast. I'm very sorry I can't make this any longer. I am doing fine, I hope you are too. Until next time dear. Sincerely , Alfred Scales

Dearest Henrietta,                      As you know, President Lincoln has signed the Emancipation proclamation. Though I agree that slavery is a sin, the Negroes are not our top priority right now , setting them free at a time like this is an asinine decision. Lee has defeated the Union once again, this time at Chancellorsville. Luckily for us, we have gained an advantage! Jackson was mistakenly shot by one of his own stupid men , he's not so tough now. Without Jackson's brilliance to assist Lee, the Union may have a shot at the next battle. I must write quickly, we have drills tomorrow and rest is a must (which the person who is currently writing this doesn't seem to understand, did I break the forth wall, oops.) There is one last topic that I wish to discuss, draft riots have erupted in New York City. After the first draft law was passed, protests of arisen in almost every Northern state. Surprisingly, many Northern states feel sympathy towards the So

To my eldest daughter,                                               This is a letter just for you, tell your mother and siblings that I'm okay. The South stole Merrimack, and made it their own, Virginia, they called it. However, we had our own ship by the name of Monitor, and there was a large clash between  both sides, where none was victorious. Those people, what is wrong their their mental state? Luckily, the Union has beat the Confederates at Shiloh, it's amazing I'm still alive, five of my best friends have passed, along with the estimated 23,000 who lost their lives . Your in-laws live in Tennessee , no? I hope the battle was not too much of a shock. Indeed, even I, after fighting for so long, am losing my state of mind. Unfortunately, we have a new opponent. Rebel general, " Stonewall Jackson ", they call him. What an absurd man, how could he! You must have been so scared, were you not? The Union was forced to send more troops to D.C. becaus

Charles ward 1861 letter to the family

Dearest Henrietta,              I miss you and the children very much, and I hope this war ends soon. Though we put most effort into winning, we aren't faring too well, I'm afraid. The Union has lost the battle of Bull Run to those treasonous fools. It's quite surprising, as we were so sure of Northern victory. This may be more difficult than we thought.   They even had the audacity to eat the remains of the civilians' lunch, how pathetic. Worry not! For we shall win the next fight! Lincoln has assigned a new general, a man by the name of "George E. McClellan", or as most of the men here call him, "Little Mac".   He has given us an elite force , one that will guide this army to victory, I'm sure of it! A new age of naval ships is upon us. With these iron giants , we will crush the Southern troops for good. I hope to see you and the boys soon.                                  With love and spirit,

Loretta Thai Boyd Blog Post Number 1 1861

Loretta Thai Boyd April 20, 1861 The first casualties of war are in the Baltimore riots , I can not believe what happen. Instead of dying in the battlefields, Massachusetts soldiers died from citizens. Not only did the soldiers died from citizens, but citizens also died from soldiers . Already the Union army is already not getting support from the border states . I can tell this war will take a while, but the Union is underestimating the capabilities of the South. I fear this war will take many lives, the Union is not getting serious. Anywho living in the camps have been very difficult to adapt to, I do not blame myself though. I had led a very happy lift up until this point. Food is very strange. Since the war just began, I don't really have many patients to help, I have been in the kitchen cooking meals for the soldier. There is this one quarter - inch or haft - inch thick hard cracker eaten by Civil War soldiers, also known as biscuits, cracker, or army bread, they call

Dear Sally, I'm not doing very well, we lost the battle of Bull Run. I can't believe that we lost to a bunch of southern confederates . I know for a fact that we will hit them ten times harder the next battle. Just you wait dear, i'll be home in no time. I heard we are getting a new chief, his name is George McClellan . The boys here call him "little mac".  We have an elite force now because of him . I wish to be better then him soon. Battle will be bit easier because we have an new age of naval ships. I hope we can use this against the south soon. Like i said before, I hope i come home soon. I hope you are doing well, until next time.  Sincerely , Alfred A Scales

McCooks Journal Entry

Journal Entry November 3, 1861 starting with Lincoln asking 75,000 people to join his army and the first casualties occurring in the city of Baltimore, I'll say that so far this year has been mildly filled with engaging events. For example, near the end of July and a couple miles from our capital of Washington D.C., the confederate and the union had their first major battle of the civil war at Bull Run but sadly the Confederate took victory over us which made me think that t his war might be much more difficult then i thought.   Weeks pass and congress decides to create a new act known as the first income tax in our history. This was a great move by congress because this meant that this would fix some of the tax problems we had and this also made it that the government could raise and gain money which I hope they could use to supply their troops so they can defeat the confederacy and bring them back into the Union. Another thing to mention is that this new tax law was heavil

Journal Entry August 29 - 30, 1862 War has change the lives of many, my stay at Clara Barton’s home has been lively, I realise I have met a very astounding person. With her, I started to get my grip together and started helping out in the war. Thirteen months after a Confederate victory at Bull Run , both armies return to the same battle ground for a second round of fighting . I have to say I am not quite surprise that the North fail, so many casualties and non experience recruits. This made me realise that not only will this war continue on longer, lives of many are in jeopardy. Not only was the battle that was taking lives, a fatal disease of the human intestines , usually caused by unsanitary conditions of military camp and ballet sites call dysentery , has contribute to the cause of killing people. So many problems has been popping up that I realise that I can’t continue on helping others when my futile attempts is not contributing enough. That is wh

Dear Sally, I am doing very well, and I'm glad that you are too. I am sure you have heard about the battle of bull run. I cant believe we lost. War is getting a bit more difficult, because we are in a new age of Naval warfare .  Mr. Grant (union General) had us an early victory at Ft. Henry. However, I heard this was one of the most bloodiest battles . I also heard that total casualties was up to 23,000 peo ple . Grant beat the confederates under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnson . I can't wait till we win this war! like I've said in the letter before I am willing to loose my life for the sake of preserving this union. This is the end of my letter dear, very sad I could not write more. I hope you and the boys do well back home, and I cant wait for us to win. Just you wait, the south will never see us comin'. I'm sure you know that, as this is the reason that made me leave, and though I am sorry, I had to assist. It's been quite an eventful year, has it not? I have been reading more on current events and I have found that there are many views and mixed beliefs on the election of our president. His presence seems to have disturbed the South, driving them to perform an act as asinine and treasonous as attempt s

Letter home to my beloved parents

Dear Mother, Mary I've been missing you a lot lately and if you didn't know, President Lincoln asked for 75,000 men to join his army and I feel like this will raise my chances into bringing the south back into the union because if we succeed and become victorious over the south they'll have to join back. You and dad would always talk about how slavery wasn't legally right and should eventually be stopped and I've kept that in mind when I decided to Join Lincolns army, I partially agree with you two but the more important thing we need to do is bring the south back because states seceding shouldn't be legal and it isn't right. Another thing to mention is 5 days after Lincoln announced his need for people to join his army, the first casualties occurred and surprisingly they didn't occur on a battlefield but in the city of Baltimore. From what i have heard, soldiers were marching towards Washington D.C. and some citizens tried to stop them which led to s

A letter of Loretta Tina Boyd Enlistment to My Father

April 15, 1861 Dear Father, After  the responce of the surrender of Ft.Sumter, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteeers to form an army . Many editorials has been made both criticing and supporting Lincoln . News of the south seceding has travel far, since this is new, no one has no ideas what to expect. I have decided for the betterment of this nation we must untie and fix what had been lost, our peace. What should had been fix a long time ago, about the debate on what we should do about slavery. Obviously the United States have been putting off this topic for far too long. All the Compromise and events has lead up to this segregation . The Compromise of   1850 was only trying to delay the fact that our nation is slowly cracking under tension. I have decided to join the army as a volunteer.  I am fighting this war to keep the United States of America together.  It has been only been a while since I last seen you and I have miss you dearly. I made great friends and com

A letter Home(Enlistment) : Alfred A. Scales

To my dearest Sally,      I am doing very well and, I hope you and the boys are too. As you may know, Lincoln has called for 75,000 volunteers to form an army. I will be serving as a captain, so I am sure you are very proud of me. I have read many editorials criticizing Lincoln, and they've angered me. How dare the south go against the Constitution and secede illegally! Saying this I hope you and the boys do not associate yourselves with copperheads , they are nothing but trouble. How dare Northerners agree with the illegal actions of the south seceding ! I hope you understand that I will be willing to die for our nation to be united. There cannot be a United States of America when the bottom half has seceded. I know for a fact that we will win the war. Besides, the South is too small to do any real harm. I'm sure this war will be over very soon. Take care of yourself and make sure to check up on our boys. Also tell them their father said hello. Until then.
