A letter home 1862 Charles C. Ward

         To my eldest daughter,

This is a letter just for you, tell your mother and siblings that I'm okay. The South stole Merrimack, and made it their own, Virginia, they called it. However, we had our own ship by the name of Monitor, and there was a large clash between  both sides, where none was victorious. Those people, what is wrong their their mental state? Luckily, the Union has beat the Confederates at Shiloh, it's amazing I'm still alive, five of my best friends have passed, along with the estimated 23,000 who lost their lives. Your in-laws live in Tennessee, no? I hope the battle was not too much of a shock. Indeed, even I, after fighting for so long, am losing my state of mind.
Unfortunately, we have a new opponent. Rebel general, "Stonewall Jackson", they call him. What an absurd man, how could he! You must have been so scared, were you not? The Union was forced to send more troops to D.C. because of his tactics, clever, yet so irritating. We are struggling, 3 of our armies have been defeated, our supplies seized, havoc has risen in a mere 30 days. To fuel the fire more, the seven days battle ended in our demise. What a lousy General we have! Even a child could see the outcome of his action, so foolish they were!
A friend of mine was recently sent to fight at Bull Run once more. Both Lee and Jackson were there, General Pope's reputation was broken. We are, indeed, struggling. My head hurts, I can only pray for the better outcome. After all, God is on our side, he must be right?

                                     With Love, your father,
                                                                                Charles C. Ward
