A letter to the family (enlistment) Charles C. Ward

                                                                                                                            April 15, 1861

       Dearest Henrietta,

In response to the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Lincoln has requested 75,000 men to partake in forming an army as volunteers. I'm sure you know that, as this is the reason that made me leave, and though I am sorry, I had to assist. It's been quite an eventful year, has it not? I have been reading more on current events and I have found that there are many views and mixed beliefs on the election of our president. His presence seems to have disturbed the South, driving them to perform an act as asinine and treasonous as attempt succession. However, despite the naive minds which argue for the ability to break the bond of unity, most of the North, not regarding the Border States, seem to be very pleased with Lincolns choice. Despite the Rebels' ludicrous and confident arguing, the war is not in their favor. They may the upper hand in military training, but their access to supplies and information is limited. I, personally, am one of the few who know what they're are doing, and I am pleased to inform you that my ranking has been upgraded to Captain. I have not asked about the children, how are they? I hope they are as proud of me as I am of them. Until then, take care.
The war is brewing, and the fabric of God that completes us has begun to tear. We are the needle of hope and the thread of liberty, to lay my life for justice, without a doubt, we will prevail as a Nation.

                                        With everlasting love,

                                                               Charles C. Ward
