Dear Sally,



     How are you? Have you heard of the president's proclamation to free slaves. Former slaves must be really happy with that idea, me, I could go either way.  I can't believe Lee won at Chancellorsville, we need a better leader. I heard this was Lee's greatest victory... pfft.  I heard about the draft law going on, hopefully the boys are enlisted so they can prove themselves.  However if they do get drafted hopefully they don't get injured. I wish my boys they best of luck. I hope you are doing wonderful, have you heard of the Thanksgiving proclamation. I will hopefully be able to go back home and eat a nice feast. I'm very sorry I can't make this any longer. I am doing fine, I hope you are too. Until next time dear.

       To my dearest Sally,      I am doing very well and, I hope you and the boys are too. As you may know, Lincoln has called for 75,000 volunteers to form an army. I will be serving as a captain, so I am sure you are very proud of me. I have read many editorials criticizing Lincoln, and they've angered me. How dare the south go against the Constitution and secede illegally! Saying this I hope you and the boys do not associate yourselves with copperheads , they are nothing but trouble. How dare Northerners agree with the illegal actions of the south seceding ! I hope you understand that I will be willing to die for our nation to be united. There cannot be a United States of America when the bottom half has seceded. I know for a fact that we will win the war. Besides, the South is too small to do any real harm. I'm sure this war will be over very soon. Take care of yourself and make sure to check up on our boys. Also tell them their father said hello. Until then.

A letter home 1862 : Nicole Scales

Dear Sally, I am doing very well, and I'm glad that you are too. I am sure you have heard about the battle of bull run. I cant believe we lost. War is getting a bit more difficult, because we are in a new age of Naval warfare .  Mr. Grant (union General) had us an early victory at Ft. Henry. However, I heard this was one of the most bloodiest battles . I also heard that total casualties was up to 23,000 peo ple . Grant beat the confederates under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnson . I can't wait till we win this war! like I've said in the letter before I am willing to loose my life for the sake of preserving this union. This is the end of my letter dear, very sad I could not write more. I hope you and the boys do well back home, and I cant wait for us to win. Just you wait, the south will never see us comin'.
