Charles ward 1861 letter to the family

 Dearest Henrietta,

I miss you and the children very much, and I hope this war ends soon. Though we put most effort into winning, we aren't faring too well, I'm afraid. The Union has lost the battle of Bull Run to those treasonous fools. It's quite surprising, as we were so sure of Northern victory. This may be more difficult than we thought. They even had the audacity to eat the remains of the civilians' lunch, how pathetic. Worry not! For we shall win the next fight! Lincoln has assigned a new general, a man by the name of "George E. McClellan", or as most of the men here call him, "Little Mac". He has given us an elite force, one that will guide this army to victory, I'm sure of it! A new age of naval ships is upon us. With these iron giants, we will crush the Southern troops for good. I hope to see you and the boys soon.

                                 With love and spirit,
                                                                     Charles C. Ward
