A letter home 1863 Charles C. Ward

          Dearest Henrietta,

As you know, President Lincoln has signed the Emancipation proclamation. Though I agree that slavery is a sin, the Negroes are not our top priority right now, setting them free at a time like this is an asinine decision.
Lee has defeated the Union once again, this time at Chancellorsville. Luckily for us, we have gained an advantage! Jackson was mistakenly shot by one of his own stupid men, he's not so tough now. Without Jackson's brilliance to assist Lee, the Union may have a shot at the next battle.
I must write quickly, we have drills tomorrow and rest is a must (which the person who is currently writing this doesn't seem to understand, did I break the forth wall, oops.)
There is one last topic that I wish to discuss, draft riots have erupted in New York City. After the first draft law was passed, protests of arisen in almost every Northern state. Surprisingly, many Northern states feel sympathy towards the South, and hate our President, lasting three days altogether! Not only is the South against us, but the North is divided as well. We are breaking as a nation. I hope you and the children are alright, my dear. I love you all very much, never forget.

                             With love and support,

                                                                      Charles C. Ward
