A letter home (1864) McCook

Dear Mother and Father, It's been a while since I've written back to you but I'm still living and i'm doing well. March was a very interesting month for the union mostly because General McClellan has gotten a lot of hate and has now been placed in my worst generals list. He complete ignored President Lincolns orders which later resulted in Lincoln appointing Ulysses S Grant as general. We all have high hopes and expectations for him and hope he serves our union well. With all this McClellan stuff going on, the democrats chose him to face Lincoln in the presidential election . Lincoln wins the election in the November election and he wins by a landslide. Lincoln becomes re-elected and beats democratic rival George McClellan . This was a short one but I have to go now. Love you to death, and ill give you more updates with future letters McCook

1865 Scales (Nicole)

Dear Sally, This is Alfred of course, and a lot has happened throughout the war. I have good news, I will be coming back home very shortly. The Union  has finally won the war ! We won! General Lee surrendered after putting up a good fight. General Grant told us not to celebrate and rub it in Lee's men face.  Grant is a fine man, he allowed the southerners to keep all their belongings that belonged to them.  I've heard that Lincoln has been assassinated , how sad a man like him was killed. I guess ill be going home after this letter, until then. Sincerely, Alfred A. Scales

April   26 ,  1865 Dear   Loren Boyd , President Lincoln has been assassinated , just when the war has just ended, somebody couldn’t keep their pettiness to themselves. President Lincoln was at Ford’s Theater watching a performance call “ Our American Cousin ,” I have to say this assassination is quite ironic. Killing someone because of their lost, during this performance, if it was any other play, I would’ve thought differently. Not only that the person who assassinated Lincoln is none other than actor John Wilkes Booth . The Federal troops  set the barn ablaze to force the actor to come out . While trying to escape, Sergeant Boston Corbett , shot without order ,  killing the actor . I feel quite bad for Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln , I would have been devastated to witness my own husband death. Everybody is devastated especially when they should be celebrating now that the war is over. I can’t help but feel very tired, now that the war is over. So man

A letter Home 1864 (Scales)

Dear Sally,   I have the greatest news! That man Grant has taken command of the Union Army , I know he can lead us to success. However, I heard from the other men that General Grant received a position as lieutenant General  days before. I also heard that that's the reason why he didn't attended Washington.  I can't believe that sad of a man McClellan ran for president against Lincoln , he knew he was gonna loose right? Lincoln was re-elected , that's good news. I heard he received 212 electoral votes , that's amazing. How are things back home? Are people protesting Lincoln's re-election? I am excited to go back to battle, but, I do hope this ends soon. The South needs to figure out that they are at the wrong. You know, their are many people fighting for the end of slavery, and the rights are blacks. I thought many people would fight to make The United States united again, but I forgot there was many more. I love how every boy in this war is very passionate,

Dear Kim Te Juan and Obadiah-Assman.                                   Once again, I am very sorry for letting your aunts and uncles name you. I am having a fine time in the war, it is indeed difficult but it is nothing that your strong father can't handle! Today me and the boys bought some ingredients from a Sutler.  We used pumpkin that we took from a Southern farm and boiled it until thick, then we passed it through a sieve. Once we finished, we mixed it with the flour that we had bought and baked it to make a fine bread! It is absolutely delicious! Tell your mother to make some, it is quiet good. Remember, a Union is stronger than anything, until then, my children, see you later.             With love, your father,                                                                                   Charles C. Ward
